The First Salute refers to a historic moment on November 16, 1776, when the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius became the first foreign entity to officially recognize the United States of America.

On that day, the American ship Andrew Doria sailed into the harbour flying the new American flag the “Grand Union Flag.” The Dutch governor of Sint Eustatius, Johannes de Graaff, ordered a cannon salute from Fort Oranje in response.

In naval tradition, returning a salute is a sign of recognition and respect between nations. By answering the salute, Sint Eustatius effectively acknowledged the United States as an independent country well before many others did.
